In-House/Facility Management Benchmarking Survey Report: A Summary

The 2021 CMM In-House/Facility Management Benchmarking Survey Report, which was sponsored by Coastwide Professional, gave a glimpse into how the global pandemic has affected facility managers and in house service providers and new trends being observed. The purpose of this article is to briefly highlight some of the findings from the survey.

According to the survey, there was an increase in the overall purchase of disinfectants and cleaning equipment among facility managers. Most of the respondents said they purchased approximately 1-      20% more disinfectants than 2019 and 57% expect 2020 purchase to be on par with 2021 purchases.

Health and Safety Protocols also held a place of prominence among facility managers. The survey results suggested that facility managers quickly adapted to the growing demands of the COVID-19 pandemic safety concerns. More than 90% of facilities posted new signage, 81% installed partitions or barrier shields, and 72% installed touchless hand sanitizer stations, which have all become familiar sights of the new facility landscape.

Some of the highlights from the survey were:

  • 34% said they increased purchase of disinfectants by 1-20%

  • 90% implemented new signage/visual cues to promote hand hygiene and social distancing

  • 47% of respondents managed educational facilities (k-12 and college/universities), followed by hospitality (17%) and commercial space (12%)

  • 46% did not outsource a portion of their cleaning/janitorial services in the past 12 months

  • restrooms, carpets and entryways/foyers, hard floor surfaces and multi surface areas were listed as the top 5 problem areas for facility managers

  • cleaners and disinfectants (93%), cleaning supplies (92%), hand soap/sanitizers (90%),paper products (89%) and restroom dispensers (85%) were the top 5 purchased items

  • 45% had to adapt to using electrostatic sprayers, followed by 24% who had to learn UV disinfection technology and 17% antimicrobial surfaces/coatings
